OAKWOOD COMES UP SHORT DESPITE SPIRITED EFFORT AGAINST PHILANDER SMITH

Oakwood University hadn't had much to celebrate through its first 10 games of the season.

The Ambassadors hadn't tasted victory and with Gulf Coast Athletic Conference favorite Philander Smith in town Thursday night, it didn't appear they would capture their first win.

However, Simon Jacob's team had other ideas.

Oakwood went toe-to-toe with Philander Smith for more than 38 minutes, but in the end, the Panthers made a couple of plays late to hold on for a 71-65 victory at Ashby Auditorium.

"That was one of our more spirited efforts of the season," Jacob said. "I wish our kids could have been rewarded for it."

The loss dropped the Ambassadors to 0-11 overall and 0-3 in league play. The Panthers improved to 5-5 and 2-1.

Oakwood trailed 35-26 at intermission, but Philander Smith opened the second half with a 17-8 run to take its largest lead of the game at 52-34 with just over 14 minutes remaining. However, the Ambassadors refused to fold.

Oakwood battled back over the next 12-plus minutes, outscoring the Panthers 31-15 and pulled to within 67-65 on two free throws by Ryan Anderson with 1:32 to play. Unfortunately, the Ambassadors missed their last three shots as Philander Smith hung on for the victory.

Nicholas Kennard (Nashville, TN) led Oakwood with 17 points, including three 3-pointers. Judelin Prophete (Miami, FL) finished with 15 points, a game-high 10 rebounds and four blocks.

Brian Williams (Colquitt, GA) and Amyr Dickerson (Atlanta, GA) finished with 11 points apiece. Williams also grabbed eight rebounds, had two assists, one steal and three blocks.

Oakwood shot 30.1 percent (22-of-73) from the field, including 32 percent (8-of-25) from 3-point range, and 76.5 percent (13-of-17) from the free throw line.

Raymond Reece, the GCAC preseason Player of the Year, led Philander Smith with 16 points and nine rebounds. Derrick Woods and Eric Kendrick finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Panthers shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the field, including 25 percent (3-of-12) from deep, and 74.1 percent (20-of-27) from the charity stripe.

Oakwood hosts Wiley College Saturday night at 8.
