HOT SHOOTING OAKWOOD DOWNS WILEY COLLEGE TO SNAP 11-GAME LOSING STREAK

After losing its first 11 games of the season, the Oakwood University men's basketball team kicked the door down Saturday night and came up with its first victory of the season.

Judelin Prophete (Miami, FL) and Nicholas Kennard (Nashville, TN) scored 15 points apiece and the Ambassadors got big contributions from their reserves as Oakwood downed Wiley College 83-73 at Ashby Auditorium in a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference game.

"We've been close a couple of times," Oakwood coach Simon Jacob said. "Our kids have played hard all season. I'm just glad they got rewarded tonight."

Oakwood fell 79-76 at Cumberland and played arguably its best game of the season Thursday night in a 71-65 home loss to GCAC preseason favorite Philander Smith.

The Ambassadors improved to 1-11 overall and 1-3 in league play. It was their first win since a 71-70 victory over Southern University of New Orleans on Feb. 12 in the GCAC Round Up in Marshall, Texas.

The Wildcats fell to 6-6 and 2-2.

Kennard was perfect on the night, going 5-for-5 from the field, including 3-of-3 from 3-point range and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Prophete was 7-of-13 from the field, grabbed seven rebounds, had five assists and five blocks.

Jeray Randle, Jr. (Climax, GA) finished with nine points, while Steve Aroh (Newark, NJ)  finished with eight. Combined, they spearheaded an Oakwood bench that combined for a season-high 29 points.

The Ambassadors, who have struggled shooting the ball all season, found their stroke against the Wildcats.

Oakwood shot 48.3 percent (29-of-60) from the field, including a season-high 54.5 percent (12-of-22) from deep, and 76.5 percent (13-of-17) from the charity stripe. Seven different players made 3-pointers and the 12 3-pointers made were a season high for the Ambassadors.  Kennard made three, Khari Person (Lawrenceville, GA), Amyr Dickerson (Atlanta, GA) and Aroh made two each, while Julius Mitchell (Brandywine, MD), Justin Edwards (Los Angeles, CA) and Randle made one apiece.

Delore Johnson led Wiley College with 18 points and eight rebounds. Demarius Pitts finished with 17, while Shamir Mosley added 11.

The Wildcats shot 40.3 percent (29-of-72) from the field, including 13.3 percent (2-of-15) from deep, and 76.5 percent (13-of-17) from the charity stripe.

Oakwood is off until Jan. 6 when it visits the University of the Virgin Islands.
