OAKWOOD MEN'S BASKETBALL FACES POINT UNIVERSITY TODAY IN FIREHAWKS CLASSIC

 
Almost a week after falling to Washington Adventist University in its season opener, Oakwood University will try to pick up its first win of the season today when it takes on Point University in the Firehawks Classic at the University of Tennessee-Southern in Pulaski, Tenn.

Tipoff at the Curry Athletic Center is set for 2 p.m.

Point University is located in West Point, Ga. The Skyhawks are 2-0 after beating Voorhees College and Southeastern Baptist. They are led by junior guards Justice Hayes and Jacob Crockett and graduate student Joshua Scott.

Hayes is averaging 15 points per game, while Scott is pouring in 14.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. Crockett is averaging 12.5 points per game.

Oakwood is led by Jaywill Thornton and Felix Mcghee.

Thornton, a junior guard/forward, scored a team-high 14 points in the loss to WAU. He was 4-of-8 from the field, including 1-of-2 from 3-point range, but was just 5-of-9 from the foul line. Mcghee, a junior guard from Montgomery, finished with 11 points.

The Ambassadors hurt themselves in the loss to the Shock by making only 4-of-24 from 3-point range and managing just six assists on the night.

After today's game, Oakwood will play host Tennessee-Southern Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Firehawks are 1-1 on the season, having beaten Clinton, while falling to No. 10 Freed-Hardeman.

Kendall Wright, a former Sparkman High School standout, is averaging 21 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.
