NASHVILLE – Down by as many as 15 points in the second half, Oakwood University battled back to within four points, but couldn't complete the comeback as Fisk University came away with a 66-61 victory Sunday afternoon in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Henderson A. Johnson Gymnasium.
The Ambassadors trailed 48-33 with just under 13 minutes remaining, but used a 23-12 run to pull within 60-56 on a 3-pointer by
Brian Williams (Colquitt, GA) with just over two minutes left, but couldn't get any closer.
Oakwood fell to 2-9 overall and 0-1 in league play. Fisk improved to 2-7 and 1-0.
Robert Booker II (Laurel, MD) led the Ambassadors with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Edmen Steward (Detroit, MI) finished with 10 points, while
Judelin Prophete (Miami, FL) had nine points and nine rebounds. Steward and Prophete, Oakwood's top two scorers, were a combined 8-of-27 from the field.
The Ambassadors shot 36.4 (24-of-66) percent from the field, including 38.5 (5-of-13) from 3-point range. They were 8-of-13 from the free throw line.
Jamon Reed led three Bulldogs in double figures with 16 points.
Fisk shot 41.7 (25-of-60) percent from the field, including 22.2 (2-of-9) from 3-point range, and 73.3 (14-of-19) percent from the free throw line.
Oakwood is back in action Friday at the GCAC Round Up at Dillard University in New Orleans.
The Ambassadors will play Wiley College Friday at 2 p.m., Dillard at 7 p.m. on Saturday and Rust College on Sunday at 2 p.m.
