Box Score NEW ORLEANS, La. – Oakwood University came up empty again in yet another late comeback attempt as it fell to Wiley College 62-58 Friday afternoon in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Round Up at Dent Hall at Dillard University.
The Ambassadors battled back from a nine-point deficit to tie the game at 53-all on a 3-pointer by
Nicholas Kennard (Antioch, TN) with just under four minutes remaining, but couldn't finish the comeback. Oakwood managed just two field goals the rest of the game as Wiley hung on for the victory.
The loss dropped Oakwood to 2-10 overall and 0-2 in league play. Wiley improved to 6-6 and 1-1.
The Ambassadors came out hot early on.
Oakwood jumped out to a 16-6 advantage eight minutes into the game and led by as many as 12 points on a couple of other occasions, the last time at 22-10 on a basket by
Chris Davis (Washington, DC) with just under nine minutes left in the first half.
Unfortunately, Wiley used a 24-9 run to go up 34-31 at intermission and then held off a frantic Oakwood rally down the stretch.
Edmen Steward (Detroit, MI) led the Ambassadors with 16 points, but was only 6-of-17 from the field.
Justin Edwards (Bradenton, FL) finished with 14 points, including four 3-pointers, while
Judelin Prophete (Miami, FL) had 12 points and 17 rebounds.
Oakwood shot 33.9 percent (19-of-56) from the field, including 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from 3-point range, and 52 percent (13-of-25) from the free throw line.
The Ambassadors hurt themselves with 21 turnovers and from the foul line. Wiley outscored Oakwood 26-11 off turnovers, 38-16 in the paint and 22-14 in bench points.
Maurice Harvey led Wiley with 20 points.
The Wildcats shot 35.9 percent (23-of-64) from the field, including 16 percent (4-of-25) from 3-point range, and 66.7 percent (12-of-18) from the charity stripe.
Oakwood takes on Dillard today at 7 p.m.
