Oakwood University faded down the stretch for the second day in a row and came out on the losing end in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Round Up at Ashby Auditorium Monday night.
A day after going scoreless over the last five minutes in a narrow loss to Dillard University, the Lady Ambassadors managed just three points over the final five-plus minutes as Philander Smith College came away with a 62-51 victory.
"We've got to learn how to finish games," Oakwood coach  Aleshia Greene said. "We were right there but couldn't close it out."
The loss dropped Oakwood to 4-14 overall and 2-4 in league play, while PSC improved to 13-4 and 4-2.
The game was a back-and-forth affair midway through the third quarter with Oakwood clinging to a one-point lead, but PSC closed the quarter with a 10-2 to take its largest lead of the game at 47-40 entering the fourth quarter.
The Lady Ambassadors kept chipping away at the lead and got within four points on two occasions, the last time 52-48 on a layup by
Denaj'za Jackson with just under six minutes remaining. Unfortunately, Greene's team couldn't get any closer as the Lady Panthers pulled away late.
Brittany Lawless-Sherrill (Goodlettsville, TN) scored a game-high 17 points to lead Oakwood. She was 6-of-13 from the field, 5-of-8 from the free throw line and grabbed five rebounds.
Nekaya Williams (Lilburn, GA) finished with 13 points. The rest of the team combined for just 21 points.
The Lady Ambassadors shot just 32.1 percent (17-of-53) from the field, including 6.7 percent (1-of-15) from 3-point range, and were just 16-of-26 from the free throw line. They also hurt themselves with 26 turnovers.
Antanisha Wade led PSC with 14 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Elaijha Brown finished with 13 points.
The Lady Panthers shot 33.3 percent (25-of-73) from the field, including 13.6 percent (3-of-21) from 3-point range, and were 9-of-16 from the charity stripe.
Oakwood hosts Tougaloo College today at 5 p.m.
