Oakwood University gave Tougaloo College all it could handle for more than 36 minutes Tuesday night in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Round Up at Ashby Auditorium.
Keiah Dancy's three-point play with just under five minutes remaining gave the Lady Ambassadors, who trailed by as many as 14 points, a 63-61 lead. After Berniya Harden scored five unanswered points to put the Lady Bulldogs back on top,
Nekaya Williams hit two free throws to pull Oakwood within 66-65 with 3:47 to play.
Unfortunately, Oakwood managed just two points the rest of the way as Tougaloo went on to claim an 80-67 victory before a raucous crowd.
The loss dropped the Lady Ambassadors to 4-15 overall and 2-5 in league play. Tougaloo improved to 4-11 and 3-4.
Oakwood trailed 43-32 at halftime, but opened the second half with a 12-4 run to pull within 47-44 on a 3-pointer by
Hannah Cohn with just over five minutes left in the third quarter.
Tougaloo regrouped and scored 10 of the next 12 points to take a 57-46 advantage into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Ambassadors started the fourth quarter strong, using a 17-2 run to take a 63-61 lead on Dancy's three-point play at the 4:59 mark. From there, Oakwood scored just four points the rest of the way in suffering its fourth straight loss.
Dancy (Detroit, MI) led Oakwood with a game-high 20 points.
Denaj'za Jackson (Detroit, MI) finished with 14 points, while
Trenisha Adams (Rome, GA) and Williams (Lilburn, GA) scored 13 and 11, respectively.
Oakwood shot 36.8 percent (25-of-68) from the field, including 21.7 percent (5-of-23) from 3-point range, and 70.6 percent (12-of-17) from the free throw line.
Harden led five Tougaloo players in double figures with 13 points and nine rebounds.
The Lady Bulldogs shot 41.8 percent (28-of-67) from the field, including 40 percent (8-of-20) from 3-point range, and 64 percent (16-of-25) from the charity stripe.
Oakwood is back in action on Feb. 3 against Philander Smith College in the GCAC Round Up at Rust College in Holly Springs, Miss.
