OAKWOOD LETS BIG LEAD SLIP AWAY IN LOSS TO DILLARD IN GCAC ROUND UP

Oakwood University let a big lead in the third quarter slip away as Dillard University came from behind to claim a 62-58 victory Sunday afternoon in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Round Up at Ashby Auditorium.

The Lady Ambassadors built a 40-25 lead with just under eight minutes left in the third, but the Lady Bleu Devils closed the quarter with a 20-6 run to take a 47-46 lead going into the final period.

Oakwood regrouped and led 58-53 after Brittany Lawless-Sherrill's (Goodlettsville, TN) jumper with five minutes left, but Dillard scored the final nine points of the game to pick up the win.

The Lady Ambassadors fell to 4-13 overall and 2-3 in league play with the loss. Dillard improved to 5-12 and 1-3.

Oakwood trailed 14-11 at the end of the first quarter, but used a 13-0 run in the second quarter to go by 13 points before settling for a 36-25 advantage at intermission.

It was 40-25 after Chyna Brown (Atlanta, GA) made two free throws with 7:33 left in the third quarter, but Dillard closed the third quarter and the fourth quarter with big runs to earn a split of the season series.

Andisa Labossiere (Huntsville, AL) led Oakwood with 11 points off the bench. She scored nine of those points during the Lady Ambassadors' 13-0 late in the second quarter to help them take control of the game at the time. She was 4-of-5 from the field, 3-of-4 from the free throw line, had two steals and a blocked shot.

Lawless-Sherrill finished with nine points, while Nekaya Williams (Lilburn, GA) and Trenisha Adams (Rome, GA) had eight apiece.

Oakwood shot 40 percent (22-of-55) from the field, including 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from 3-point range, and 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from the free throw line.

Taylor Dewitt led three Dillard players in double figures with 14 points.

Dillard shot 44.6 percent (24-of-56) from the field, including 42.9 percent (3-of-7) from 3-point range, and 81.8 percent (9-of-11) from the charity stripe.

Oakwood will take on Philander Smith College today at 5 p.m.
