OAKWOOD RESPONDS, HANGS ON TO BEAT DILLARD IN GCAC ROUND UP

NEW ORLEANS, La. – A day after getting walloped by Wiley College in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Round Up, Oakwood University got up off the mat and beat Dillard University.

Three Lady Ambassadors finished in double figures and Oakwood closed the game with a 10-3 run, including six straight free throws, to seal the 61-54 victory Saturday night at Dent Hall.

"I challenged the team after the loss to Wiley," said Oakwood coach Aleshia Greene, referring to the 89-69 loss on Friday. "They responded and we made some plays down the stretch to get the win."

The win lifted Oakwood to 4-11 on the season and 2-1 in league play. Dillard fell to 4-11 and 0-3 with its third straight loss.

The game was tied on three different occasions down the stretch, the last time at 51-all after Oakwood's Nekaya Williams hit two free throws with four minutes remaining. A few seconds later, Denaj'za Jackson's layup gave the Lady Ambassadors the lead for good, but they still had some work to do.

Dillard pulled to within one late, but Oakwood made its free throws to hold on for the win.

Williams (Lilburn, GA) led Oakwood with 14 points. She was also 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Trenisha Adams (Rome, GA), who had all three of Oakwood's 3-pointers,  and Brittany Lawless-Sherrill (Goodlettsville, TN) finished with 12 points apiece. Jackson (Detroit, MI) had a terrific all-around game with seven points, 13 rebounds and five assists.

Oakwood shot 36.7 percent (22-of-60) from the field, including 27.3 percent (3-of-11) from 3-point range, and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the free throw line.

Taylor Dewitt led three Bleu Devils in double figures with 13 points.

Dillard shot 29.2 percent (21-of-72) from the field, including 7.7 percent (1-of-13) from 3-point range, and 55 percent (11-of-20) from the charity stripe.

Oakwood is back in action today against Rust College. Tipoff is noon.
