LEBANON, Tenn. –
Edmen Steward and Judelin Prophete combined for 47 points, but it was Steven Aroh's layup with 27 seconds left that lifted Oakwood University to a thrilling come-from-behind 74-73 victory over No. 20 Cumberland University Monday night at Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.
The Ambassadors improved to 2-9 with the win while snapping their eight-game losing streak. The Phoenix fell to 5-3.
Oakwood trailed by nine points with just under five minutes left in the first half, but used a 14-6 run to pull within 37-36 at intermission. The Ambassadors trailed by as many as five points on two separate occasions in the second half, the last time at 73-68 with 2:43 left before battling back for their first victory since beating Stillman College on Nov. 1.
"My hat's off to our guys," Oakwood coach
Simon Jacob said. "They could have easily folded, but they kept battling and found a way to win the game. Edmen and Judelin carried us, but we got contributions from a number of different guys. Two of our freshmen, Justin Edwards and Steven, came up big down the stretch."
Prophete's layup with 1:25 left pulled Oakwood within 73-72 and after Cumberland missed a layup, Edwards found Aroh in transition and his layup with 27 seconds left won it for the Ambassadors.
The Phoenix got the ball to halfcourt and called a timeout to set up a play, but the Ambassadors forced a turnover to come away with the win.
Steward finished with a game-high 27 points in 29 minutes. The 6-foot-5 senior from Detroit was spectacular, going 10-of-17 from the field, including 4-of-9 from 3-point range and making all three of his free throws. Fourteen of Steward's 27 points came in the second half.
Prophete scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. He was 8-of-13 from the field and made all four of his free throws in 34 minutes.
Edwards didn't score, but had a game-high five assists, two rebounds, two steals and only one turnover in 25 minutes.
The Ambassadors shot 51 percent (29-of-57) from the field, 28 percent (5-of-18) from 3-point range and were 11-of-13 from the free throw line.
Jordan Stephens and Ty'Reek Johnson led Cumberland with 17 points apiece. Oakwood limited the Phoenix to 3-of-16 shooting from 3-point range and Cumberland was just 12-of-19 from the charity stripe.
Oakwood returns home Saturday night with a doubleheader against Washington Adventist University.
