OAKWOOD SEASON COMES TO AN END IN GCAC CHAMPIONSHIP

TUSCALOOSA – Oakwood University basketball coach Simon Jacob declared his team was ready to shock the world going into Wednesday's game against Southern University of New Orleans in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference 2024 Hope Credit Union Men's Basketball Championship.

The Ambassadors didn't shock the world, but they came close.

Oakwood, the No. 10 seed, gave No. 7 seed SUNO all it wanted before falling 96-87 inside Birthright Alumni Hall.

"Our guys really competed, especially in the second half," Jacob said. "They could have folded being down 15 at halftime, but we challenged them and they refused to quit."

The Ambassadors ended the season 1-27. SUNO (8-21) advanced to play No. 2 seed Philander Smith (18-8) today at 2 p.m.

Oakwood fell behind 12-4 early on, but battled back and used a 16-8 run to pull within 24-20 on a 3-pointer by Nicholas Kennard midway through the first half.

Unfortunately, SUNO closed the half with a 23-12 run to take a 47-32 lead at intermission.

The Ambassadors wouldn't go away.

Jeray Randall Jr. drained a 3-pointer to pull Oakwood within 58-48, but the Knights pushed the lead to 66-50 with just over 12 minutes remaining. The Ambassadors got within eight points on two different occasions, the last time with two minutes left on a layup by Amyr Dickerson that made it 90-82, but couldn't get any closer.
