WILLIAMS' DOUBLE-DOUBLE HELPS OAKWOOD CAPTURE FIRST EVER GCAC VICTORY

 
JACKSON, Miss. – Oakwood University volleyball made history Thursday night and Trinity Williams had a lot to do with it.

Williams, a freshman outside hitter from Midlothian, Texas, finished with a double-double to not only help the Ambassadors down Tougaloo College 3-0, but also help them capture their first-ever Gulf Coast Athletic Conference victory.

When it was over, Oakwood came away with a 25-21, 25-15 and 24-23 win at the Owens Health and Wellness Center.

It was the Ambassadors' first conference win in 18 tries dating back to last season, their first year in the league.

"It was a long time coming," said sophomore setter Cameryn Bucknor, one of six players back from last year's team that went 0-13 in  conference play. "We've been close a couple of times this year, but it's nice to finally get it done."

Oakwood improved to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in league play with the win The Ambassadors also snapped their five-game losing streak. Tougaloo fell to 1-11 and 0-4.

Williams finished with 14 kills and 12 digs to lead Oakwood. Anna Jones (Attalla, AL) backed Williams with eight kills.

Shaniya Brown (Dallas, TX) had eight digs, while Mona Okello (Overland Park, KS) finished with seven. Bucknor (Huntsville, AL) had a game-high 18 assists and four aces.

Donnayla Brown had eight kills to lead Tougaloo. Ke'Ira Coller led the Bulldogs with six digs and 15 assists.
