OAKWOOD PLAYS HARD AGAINST DEFENDING GCAC CHAMPION PHILANDER SMITH

Defending Gulf Coast Athletic Conference champion Philander Smith University made it look easy Sunday afternoon against Oakwood University, beating the Ambassadors 25-23, 25-15 and 25-12 at Ashby Auditorium.

Oakwood fell to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in league play with its fourth straight loss. Philander Smith improved to 5-6 and 3-3.

Trinity Williams (Midlothian, TX) led the Ambassadors with a team-high eight kills, while Dorian Birch (Ooltewah, TN) added seven.

Cameryn Bucknor (Huntsville, AL) and Shaniya Brown (Dallas, TX) had seven digs apiece, while Mona Okello (Overland Park, KS) finished with six. Bucknor also had 12 assists.

Ja'Niya Sanders led Philander Smith with nine kills. Maya Jones had a game-high 11 digs, while Essence Wren had 23 assists.

Oakwood is back in action Tuesday at Talladega College and Thursday at Tougaloo College.
