VETERANS, NEWCOMERS COME UP BIG AS OAKWOOD BEATS STILLMAN TO START 2-0 FOR FIRST TIME IN SCHOOL HISTORY

A trio of seasoned veterans and three newcomers helped put Oakwood University volleyball in the spotlight Monday night.

Junior Dorian Birch, senior Kaayla Butler and sophomore Cameryn Bucknor came up big, while freshmen Mona Okello, Shaniya Brown and La'Mya Mosley did some damage as well to help the Ambassadors to a 3-1 win over Stillman College at Ashby Auditorium.

The victory, Oakwood's second straight over Stillman in as many games this season, lifted the Ambassadors to a 2-0 start for the first time in school history.

"Our players deserve all the credit," said Oakwood coach Takhera Sanders, who is in her first season. "We lost that first game, but they didn't hang their heads. They battled back and played really well and won the match."

After falling 17-25 in the first game, the Ambassadors won the next three 25-17, 25-21 and 25-21.

Birch (Ooltewah, TN) led the way with a team-high 12 kills. Okello (Overland Park, KS) finished with eight, while Butler (Seattle, WA) chipped in with six.

Brown (Dallas, TX) led the team with 25 digs. Bucknor (Huntsville, AL) and Mosley (Nashville, TN) finished with 13 and 12, respectively. Bucknor finished with a game-high 37 assists.

Raine Patterson led Stillman with nine kills, while Aeraeonna Manuel added eight.

Anniston Jones had 35 digs for the Tigers. Emily Powell and Gracie Fjeldstad finished with 16 and 15, respectively. Fjeldstad had a team-high 14 assists.

Oakwood will try to run its winning streak to three straight games next Tuesday when West Alabama comes to town. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
