JACKSON, Miss. – Oakwood University saw its season come to an end Thursday afternoon as Philander Smith College came away with a 60-41 victory in the first round of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship at Tougaloo College's Owens Health and Wellness Center.
The 41 points were a season-low for the Ambassadors.
Oakwood finished the season 4-22 with the loss. Philander Smith, who won all three meetings during the season, improved to 21-6 and advanced to the semifinals on Saturday.
The Ambassadors fell behind 36-23 at halftime and didn't threaten the Panthers in the second half.
Justin Edwards (Bradenton, FL) led Oakwood with nine points, while
Judelin Prophete (Miami, FL) chipped in with seven.
Robert Booker II (Laurel, MD) had six points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Edwards finished with eight rebounds.
The Ambassadors shot 32.7 percent (16-of-49) from the field, including 20 percent (3-of-15) from 3-point range, and 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from the free throw line.
Oakwood also hurt itself with 25 turnovers.
Christione Rufus led PSC with 14 points. Dontrell Johnson added 11.
The Panthers shot 39 percent (23-of-59) from the field, including 18.8 percent (3-of-16) from beyond the arc, and 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from the charity stripe.
