Brittany Lawless-Sherrill and
Denaj'za Jackson wanted to send Oakwood University's four seniors out with a bang Saturday night. The rising seniors certainly played like it.
Lawless-Sherrill (Goodlettsville, TN) scored 16 points, including a 3-pointer with just under five minutes left in the third quarter to give Oakwood its first lead of the game at 42-41, and Jackson (Detroit, MI) Â finished with 15 points before fouling out late as Fisk University closed the game on a 7-0 run to come away with a 75-67 victory before a packed house at Ashby Auditorium.
Oakwood's four seniors –
Jayda Caldwell (Huntsville, AL),
Keiah Dancy (Detroit, MI),
Andisa Labossiere (Huntsville, AL) and
Michelle Vaughn (Madison Heights, MI) – were honored before the game. Dancy started strong, scoring Oakwood's first eight points, but the Ambassadors trailed 19-10 at the end of the first quarter and 32-22 at intermission.
Oakwood outscored Fisk 28-19 in the third quarter as Lawless-Sherrill, Jackson and
Trenisha Adams (Rome, GA) combined for 23 points and it was Lawless-Sherrill's 3-pointer that gave the Ambassadors their first lead at 42-41 with 4:35 remaining in the period.
Oakwood would take the lead on six other occasions down the stretch, the last time at 62-61 on a 3-pointer by Adams with just over four minutes remaining, but the Ambassadors managed just five points the rest of the way as the Bulldogs swept the season series.
Oakwood fell to 5-21 overall and 3-10 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference with its fourth straight loss. Fisk improved to 17-7 and 11-3.
Lawless-Sherrill was 6-of-12 from the field, 1-of-2 from 3-point range and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. She also had five rebounds, two assists and a steal in 34 minutes.
In addition to Jackson's 15 points, Dancy and Adams finished with 13 and 12, respectively. Dancy also had seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocked shots.
Oakwood shot 34.8 percent (23-of-66) from the field, 28 percent (7-of-25) from 3-point range, and 77.8 percent (14-of-18) from the free throw line.
Maya Buckhanon led five Fisk players in double figures with 15 points and 17 rebounds.
The Bulldogs shot 41.3 percent (26-of-63) from the field, 35 percent (7-of-20) from beyond the arc, and 53.3 percent (16-of-30) from the charity stripe.
Oakwood awaits word on who it will play next week in the GCAC Tournament at Tougaloo College in Jackson, Miss.
