Oakwood University had hoped to send its three seniors –
Robert Booker II,
Jordan Hall and
Justin Watson – out with a win Saturday night. Unfortunately, Fisk University spoiled the celebration.
The Bulldogs built a big halftime lead and never looked back as they beat the Ambassadors 76-58 before a packed house at Ashby Auditorium.
The loss dropped Oakwood 4-21 overall and 2-12 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. Fisk improved to 7-15 and 6-8.
Judelin Prophete made two free throws to give the Ambassadors an 8-7 lead less than four minutes into the game. The Bulldogs responded with a 14-2 run over the next six minutes to go up 21-10.
A'drelin Robinson's jumper pulled Oakwood within seven at 21-14 with just over nine minutes left in the first half, but Fisk exploded down the stretch and took a 39-23 lead at halftime.
The Ambassadors never got closer than 14 the rest of the way as the Bulldogs' lead swelled to as many as 25 points at 65-40 with just under eight minutes remaining in the game.
Prophete (Miami, FL) led Oakwood with 14 points. Hall (San Antonio, TX) had nine points and nine rebounds, while Booker II (Laurel, MD) had seven points and seven rebounds.
The Ambassadors shot 32.8 percent (21-of-64) from the field, 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from 3-point range, and 57.1 percent (12-of-21) from the free throw line.
Tyon Thompson led Fisk with 16 points. Jaylen Rogers finished with 15 and Michael Ashley added 10 to go along with 13 rebounds.
The Bulldogs shot 52.8 percent (28-of-53) from the field, including 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from beyond the arc, and 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the charity stripe.
Oakwood awaits word on who it will play in the GCAC Tournament next week in Jackson, Miss.
