WILLIAMS, ALEXANDER HELP GIVE ABRAMS FIRST WIN AS OAKWOOD DOWNS BLUE MOUNTAIN COLLEGE

Nekaya Williams and Nariah Alexander combined for 29 points and 18 rebounds Monday night to help Oakwood University come away with a 56-53 victory over Blue Mountain College in its home opener and give first-year head coach Ronnie Abrams his first career victory at Ashby Auditorium.

"It feels good," Abrams said after the game. "We didn't play well, but we got the win. That's the most important thing."

Oakwood improved to 1-1 on the season with the win. Blue Mountain fell to 1-2.

The Ambassadors trailed 44-38 early in the fourth quarter, but used an 11-2 run to go up 49-46 with just under five minutes left in the game on a layup by RB Mitchell (Detroit, MI).

The Toppers regained the lead at 50-49 on a layup by Rebecca Walter with 3:49 remaining. It stayed that way for a couple of minutes before Williams buried a jumper and Alexander hit a 3-pointer to make it 54-50 with 54 seconds to play.

Trenisha Adams (Rome, GA) sealed Oakwood's first win with two free throws with seven seconds left that made it 56-51.

Williams (Atlanta, GA) finished with 18 points and eight rebounds. Alexander (Southaven, MS) scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Ambassadors shot 30.3 percent (23-of-76) from the field, including 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from 3-point range, and 50 percent (6-of-12) from the free throw line.

Walter led the Toppers with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Deja Pryor finished with 11.

Blue Mountain shot 29.1 percent (16-of-55) from the field, including 25 percent (5-of-20) from 3-point range, and 66.7 percent (16-of-24) from the free throw line.
