Despite having four players finish in double figures, Oakwood University came up short yet again in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Round Up Monday night at Ashby Auditorium.
The Ambassadors, who trailed by as many as 18 points against Philander Smith College, had trimmed it to 53-46 after a jumper by
Judelin Prophete with 10:46 remaining. From there, however, the Panthers responded with an 11-1 run to extend the lead back to 64-47 and went on to claim a 77-64 victory.
The loss dropped Oakwood to 2-15 overall and 0-6 in league play. PSC improved to 15-3 and 5-2.
The Panthers raced out to an early 12-2 advantage just over five minutes into the game.
Oakwood responded as
Felix McGhee scored seven straight points during a 12-6 run that pulled the Ambassadors within 23-18 with just under eight minutes left in the first half.
PSC flexed its muscle, outscoring Oakwood 15-2 to go up 18 points before settling for a 41-28 halftime lead.
The Ambassadors rallied in the second half, getting within seven points on two occasions, but couldn't get any closer enroute to their seventh straight loss.
Brian Williams (Colquitt, GA) led Oakwood with 15 points. Prophete (Miami, FL) finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Robert Booker (Laurel, MD) and McGhee (Montgomery, AL) scored 13 and 12 points, respectively.
The Ambassadors shot 34.5 percent (20-of-58) from the field, including 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from 3-point range, and 70 percent (21-of-30) from the free throw line.
Dontrell Johnson and Derrick Woods led three PSC players in double figures with 14 points.
The Panthers shot 40.3 percent (27-of-67) from the field, including 18.8 percent (3-of-16) from 3-point range, and 66.7 percent (20-of-30) from the charity stripe.
