Oakwood University held Crowley's Ridge College scoreless for the final three-plus of the game and Nekaya Williams hit a free throw with 1:11 remaining to lift the Ambassadors to a thrilling 48-47 victory Saturday night at Ashby Auditorium in a women's college basketball game.
The win, Oakwood's first of the season, snapped a 10-game losing streak. The Pioneers fell to 4-3.
Despite Williams' free throw that gave Oakwood the lead, the game was far from over. The Ambassadors had to make some key stops down the stretch to secure the win.
Mickayla Smith missed two free throws with 21 seconds left that could have given Crowley's Ridge the lead and Brinley Morgan missed a layup with 13 seconds to play. After an Oakwood turnover with five seconds remaining, the Ambassadors forced the Pioneers into a turnover as time expired to secure their first win of the season.
"It was a long time coming," Oakwood coach Aleshia Greene said after the victory. "That was great defense on the last possession. Our girls really buckled down and defended down the stretch."
Oakwood held Crowley's Ridge to 25 percent (16-of-64) shooting from the field, including 14 percent (5-of-34) from 3-point range.
The Ambassadors shot 35 percent (21-of-60) from the field, including 21 percent (4-of-19) from 3-point range.
Oakwood appeared to be in control after Chyna Brown's putback gave the Ambassadors their largest lead of the game at 38-28 with just under 10 minutes remaining. But the Pioneers battled back, using a 19-7 run to take a 47-45 advantage on a 3-pointer by Smith with 3:40 to play. It was Crowley's Ridge first lead since it was 11-9 late in the first quarter.
Williams led Oakwood with 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Brown finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Hunter Gibson led Crowley's Ridge with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Oakwood host Voorhees College Tuesday night at 6.
