OAKWOOD VOLLEYBALL LOOKING FOR FIRST TOURNAMENT VICTORY TODAY

BOSSIER CITY, La. – Takhera Sanders had two goals when she became the volleyball coach at Oakwood University two years ago.

One, she wanted to lead the Ambassadors to the conference tournament. Done.

Two, she wanted to lead the Ambassadors to a win in the conference tournament.

That journey starts this morning when Oakwood takes on Philander Smith in the 2024 HBCUAC Championship at Bossier Parish Community College's Billy Montgomery Gymnasium. First serve is set for 9.

The Ambassadors enter the tournament as the No. 5 seed. Meanwhile, the Panthers are the No. 4 seed.

Philander Smith swept Oakwood 3-0 back on October 18, winning 25-20, 25-17 and 25-13.

Now, three weeks later, Sanders' team has a chance for a little revenge.

"We're not ready for our season to end," said Sanders, whose team enters the championship riding a three-game losing streak. "We want to keep playing. In order to do that, we've got to beat Philander Smith. We're capable of doing that, but we've got to be ready to play."

Both teams feature HBCUAC stars.

The Ambassadors are led by All-HBCUAC second-team performer Kamaria Murray,

A freshman middle hitter, Murray finished sixth in the league in kills (192), sixth in kills per set (2.16), sixth in total points (231.5) and eighth in points per set (2.16).

Meanwhile, junior setter Cameryn Bucknor earned All-HBCUAC Honorable Mention recognition.

Bucknor finished fourth in the league in assists (475), sixth in assists per set (5.34) and seventh in the league in digs (277).

Philander Smith is led by Zarea Winn and Essence Wren, who both earned All-HBCUAC first-team honors.
