OAKWOOD VOLLEYBALL FALLS SHORT OF MISSION DESPITE SPIRITED EFFORT

BOSSIER CITY, La. -  Oakwood University volleyball came here Monday on a mission.

Takhera Sanders' team came here to win its first conference tournament match in school history. And, the Ambassadors almost did it.

Oakwood, the No. 5 seed, gave No. 4 seed Philander Smith all it could handle, but in the end, the Panthers held off a spirited effort from the Ambassadors to advance to the semifinals of the 2024 HBCUAC Championship inside Billy Montgomery Gymnasium.

Oakwood fell 24-26, 14-25, 26-24 and 19-25.

The Ambassadors ended their season 10-19, while the Panthers improved to 22-6.

"I am so proud of my team," Sanders said. "We battled for four sets and probably should have been in a fifth set had we won the first one. We have made great strides the last two years and I can't wait to see what we're going to do next year. The sky is the limit for our program."

Kamaria Murray, a second-team All-HBCUAC selection, had a game-high 16 kills to lead
Oakwood. Mona Okello and Cequoyah Harris had nine and seven, respectively.

Cameryn Bucknor posted another double-double, finishing with 30 assists and 19 digs to lead the Ambassadors.

Miriangie Rondon had 11 digs, while Okello and Murray had 10 and six, respectively.

Zarea Winn led Philander Smith with 13 kills, while Ja'Niya Sanders and Kiah Rucker finished with 10 each.

Essence Wren posted a double-double with 42 assists and 13 digs for the Panthers. Christlove Lauture had 19 digs to lead Philander Smith, while Savannah Lopez added 16.
