Oakwood volleyball will try to snap its two-game losing streak tonight when Wiley College invades Ashby Auditorium in its Gulf Coast Athletic Conference home opener. First serve is set for 8.
The Ambassadors opened the season 2-0 for the first time in school history by sweeping Stillman College, but since then have suffered losses to West Alabama and Dillard University. The loss to Dillard was their GCAC opener.
The Wildcats, losers of four straight, are 1-9 overall and 1-3 in league play. Wiley was picked to finish fifth in the GCAC preseason poll, while Oakwood (2-2, 0-1) was picked to finish eighth out of nine teams.
Oakwood has been led by three underclassmen in the early going.
Freshmen
Trinity Williams (Midlothian, TX) and
Shaniya Brown (Dallas, TX) have come up big so far along with sophomore
Cameryn Bucknor (Huntsville, AL).
Williams leads the Ambassadors with 20 kills, while
Dorian Birch (Ooltewah, TN) and
Anna Jones (Attalla, AL) have 17 apiece. Brown has a team-high 48 digs, while Bucknor has a team-high 75 assists.
Zykeya Hunt leads the Wildcats with 46 kills. T'aja Hardy has a team-high 77 digs, while LeAndria Jackson has a team-high 52 assists.
Oakwood will host defending GCAC champion Philander Smith College Sunday at 1 p.m. PSC is led by Essence Wren, the reigning GCAC Freshman of the Year and Setter of the Year.
