NEW ORLEANS – Fresh off its first Gulf Coast Athletic Conference win of the season, the Oakwood University women's basketball team will participate in the GCAC Round Up today at Dillard University at Dent Hall.
Oakwood (3-10, 1-0) will take on Wiley College (9-3, 0-1) at noon. It will be the Lady Ambassadors' first of three straight games over a three-day period. After today's game, Oakwood will take on Dillard (4-8, 0-0) Saturday at 5 p.m., before taking on Rust College (7-3, 1-0) Sunday at noon.
"This will prepare us for tournament play," Oakwood coach Aleshia Greene said. "We have to be focused and be ready to handle whatever adversity comes our way. I like where we are right now."
The Ambassadors are coming off of their first road win of the season, a 78-77 GCAC victory at Fisk University last Sunday.
Nekaya Williams (Lilburn, GA) hit a free with with 0.5 seconds left to lift Oakwood over the Bulldogs. Williams finished with 20 points, while
Trenisha Adams (Rome, GA) had 18 points, including four 3-pointers.
Brittany Lawless-Sherrill (Goodlettsville, TN) had 14 points and seven rebounds.
"We got contributions from a number of players," Greene said. "That's what it's going to take to win games in this league."
Williams is averaging a team-high 15.1 points per game, while Adams and
Denaj'za Jackson are contributing 10.1 and 8.4 points per game, respectively.
Wiley hasn't played since a 99-64 loss at Philander Smith College a month ago. It is led by shooting guard Kaitlyn Davis, who is averaging 12.8 points per game. Davis is one of four Wiley players averaging in double figures.
